Introduction To Coconut Oil Extraction Technology
Fresh coconut has an oil content of 32 – 35% with a moisture content of approximately 50%. After drying to copra the moisture content falls to 6 – 9% with a consequent rise in oil content to 65 – 70%.
Maximum yields are 9 tonnes of copra per ha, from which 6 tonnes of oil can be extracted. Coconut oil has a high percentage of saturated fatty acids, a high melting point (22 – 26°C) and does not easily become rancid. It is used for cooking, for cakes and pastries and also to make high quality soap.
The coconut oil extraction plant can be divided into four main parts which are as follows
- Copra Cutter
- Coconut Oil Expeller
- Coconut Oil Filter Press
- Steam Boiler
Copra Cutter is helpful in cutting large copra (the dried white flesh of the coconut from which coconut oil is extracted) pieces into smaller ones for oil extraction purpose. Copra cutters are manufactured with varied capacities to suit the requirement of the oil mill plant. Before cutting, the Copra is initially broken into smaller pieces by the hammer. Coconut Oil Expeller
Cracked coconut seeds are fed in the feeding hopper of long cooking kettle for cooking purpose. Cooking of coconut seeds is necessary for highest recovery and long life of coconut oil. Long cooking kettle is provided for the proper cooking of the coconut seeds. The cooking kettle has given a special shape for maximum heating surface and the better cooking.
The cooked coconut seeds will be automatically dropped in the expeller and the expeller extracts (crushes) the cooked oilseeds with the highest extraction pressure and produces the oil and by product (cake). The extraction chamber of expeller is specially designed for the highest recovery of oils as well the complete design of expeller is heavy duty for the best performance.
The filter pump is attached with the expeller and it supplies the extracted oil from the oil tank of expeller to filter press with high pressure.
Coconut Oil Filter Press
The filter press filters the extracted coconut oil by using the micro filter cloths to make it edible. Filtered coconut oil will be a very cleaned, transparent, fresh, pure and natural in taste without any chemicals and hence there is a big demand of the same coconut oil at everywhere. The filtration chamber of the filter press is specially designed with membranes plates for the best performance.
